A few weeks ago I took Joey in for xrays of his front left leg, suspecting the worst. My fears were confirmed, there is a tumor at the proximal end of his humorous (shoulder), and who are we kidding, it's surely OS.
I don't feel the need for further confirmation for this boy; he hates going to the vets, hates getting pilled, and unlike Gabe who sailed through it, could not be a worse candidate for surgery and/or chemo. Add to that his quirky personality around people he doesn't know, and I am left with trying to slow this cancer down at home.
A week ago you couldn't see any lump on his shoulder, now you can, it's protruding quite a bit and I can see that it's growing, so I believe our time will be short with Joe, but I'm going to try to make sure he's comfortable. When he lets me know he's no longer having fun, I will make sure he has a painless parting.
Since his rads a few weeks back, in addition to western pain meds (Meloxiacam, Tramadol 100mg 3x dayand gabapentin 100mg 3xday)Joey has been taking apocaps (3 pills two times per day), turmeric (golden paste) in growing doses, melatonin and modified citrus pectin 800mg twice per day. This is not doing the trick, and it may partly be because he's one of those dogs that can fish pills out and spit them out of their yummy hiding spots. So I am turning to another alternative.
I've made an herbal product called Rick Simpson oil. You can google it for details. Last night he had his first dose, and this morning another. In order to avoid any psychoactive effects, I'm making suppositories from shea butter (coconut oil melted too quickly)and so far so good. I had hoped initially after researching this product that I might be able to stay the cancer, but this seems to be a very aggressive form, based on how fast the tumor is growing, so I am now just hoping to keep him comfortable and maybe slow the progress.
Joey is also getting a homeopathic regimen developed by a homeopath in the United States, similar to what Gabe is taking.
From Aug 24
Pictures I took Sept. 9 and then Sept 11.
