Should you give a homeopathic remedy BEFORE a vaccine?
The only times I would recommend giving a homeopathic remedy before a vaccine are:
1) If a constitutional remedy has already been established for that particular dog, i.e. has proven to help with ongoing symptoms that dog has exhibited in the past. In this case, it is usually a good idea to give that specific remedy a day or two before the vaccine in order to boost the dog’s immune system overall.
2) If the dog has had a specific reaction to a vaccine in the past. In this case, administer the remedy that would be used to treat that specific reaction before the vaccine is given.
What remedy should you give?
Thuja is one of the most common remedies to administer after a vaccine, as is Silica, but they are not the only ones. Consult the list below to choose the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms displayed by the dog. Note that these symptoms could manifest anywhere between several hours and several months after vaccination.
Never be in hurry to leave the vet after your dog has been given a vaccine, as anaphylactic shock is always a possibility. If this does occur, it usually happens fairly soon after the vaccine is administered and the dog will need emergency medical attention.
APIS – The first remedy to think of if there is any facial swelling, or any indication that the dog is having an allergic reaction to the vaccine (e.g. swelling of the airways that impedes breathing). If you suspect an allergic reaction or anaphylactic shock, give a dose of Apis immediately and take your dog to the vet as soon as possible.
ACONITE – The first remedy to think of the dog displays increased fear or anxiety following vaccination.
BELLADONNA – The first remedy to think of if the dog suddenly develops a high fever following vaccination, especially if he/she has glassy eyes with dilated pupils. Also an important remedy to consider if the dog develops aggressive behaviour or turns in circles repeatedly. A good remedy to consider if the dog has a seizure, although a different remedy may be required for long term treatment.
ARSENICUM – The first remedy to think of if the dog develops diarrhea, with or without vomiting, following vaccination.
SILICA – The first remedy to think of if the dog develops a lump at the injection site following vaccination. This is VERY common! Make note of the injection site and monitor closely for the first sign of a lump. Silica is also an important remedy to consider if the dog displays signs of weakness or develops skin eruptions that are slow to heal.
THUJA – The first remedy to think of if the dog develops respiratory issues following vaccination. Also an important remedy to consider if the dog develops any kind of paralysis or rear end weakness, urinary issues or eye inflammation.
LYSSIN (also known as HYDROPHOBINUM) – The first remedy to think of if the dog develops a fear of water (which can manifest as refusing to drink) or seizures brought on by the sound of running water.
Caveat: Sometimes the dog needs a completely different remedy than one of those listed above, these are just some of the most common. The best thing to do is to consult a homeopath who can take a complete case and choose the best remedy for the specific symptoms the dog is experiencing.
What potency should you use?
I prefer to use a 200c potency for vaccine reactions when possible. If this potency is not available, you can also use 30c or 1M. Always observe the standard rules for repeating a remedy – if symptoms improve after the first dose, only repeat if and when the symptoms return.
