Many of our hounds have reached the age of 11 or 12, and they seem to be having trouble eating as much bone as they used to. I've found cutting back is helpful, so that they are getting bone every 2nd or 3rd night only, and when they do have it, it's a small riblet, or a chicken/duck foot or two, or even a dollop of ground chicken frames. This seems to be a lot easier on them then the usual 10% bone. Gone are the days that they'd snarf down an entire turkey neck!
You will be able to tell if your own hound is having trouble with too much bone if they're bringing up bone in yellow bile like they used to when you first started them on raw.
I've also started cutting back on organ meat like liver, kidney and even heart, and bumping up green tripe, which is the perfect food for the kidneys. Many seniors start having kidney problems, and I think that feeding more green tripe, sometimes with an egg, is supportive for them, and much easier to digest.
Eggs are an often-overlooked protein source that's perfect for seniors. Eggs are a perfect protein and easy to digest. Most dogs really like them, and they can be mixed in easily with other foods.
For seniors, it's important to keep their appetite up, and make it easy for them to digest and assimilate all the nutrients they can from their food. Adding a digestive enzyme can be helpful for this. Bromelain is a really good choice, because in addition to digesting protein, it's also a good anti-inflammatory for those creaky joints.
Feel free to add your tips to this thread if you have some ideas that have worked for your senior hounds.
