There are a lot of different ways to care for the nails of retired racers.
Here's a classic method from Dennis McKeon:
The most important part of nail trimming is doing the underside of the nail. For a racer, that is where the trouble starts. The nail is grooved there. The nails should be thoroughly brushed clean so that there is no debris in that groove. With a three sided, triangular file, with pad-side of the paw turned upward, you simply file straight from the base of the nail to the tip. This will create a depression in the edge of the nail, where it overhangs. At that point, you can either trim the nail by using the depression as your guide, or just file it flat and smooth. Then you just round off the edge, and voila, the nail is trimmed.
